The History of University Colleges Australia

historyPrior to 1965

Following a number of meetings over approximately 15 years, Heads of Colleges moved to formalise the arrangement.The Association in its current form began with the adoption of the Constitution at the 1966 Conference. Prior to that time the Heads of Colleges had met five times:

  • 1948 - University of Melbourne
  • 1957 - University of Queensland
  • 1959 - University of Sydney
  • 1962 - University of Tasmania at Hobart
  • 1964 - University of Western Australia

1965 Constitution

Following the adoption of a Constitution in 1966, biennial conferences and alternating local representatives meetings were hosted by the following chapters:

In the mid 1980s political reforms merged Universities with Colleges of Advanced Education. These Colleges of Advanced Education, like Universities, had residences and their own Association. The College of Advanced Education Association merged into this Association during the 1989 Conference, significantly expanding membership.  

1993 Incorporation

The Association was formally incorporated in New South Wales in 1993. In order to meet the requirement of incorporation for Annual General Meetings, the Association moved to Annual Conferences in 1994, eliminating the alternating Local Representatives meeting. Conferences held since then have been hosted by:

2010 Changes to the Association

At the 2010 AGM, members of the association voted to amend the constitution in order to change membership as follows:

"Members of University Colleges Australia are the Chief Executive Officers (the Head of College or Hall) of the Colleges and Halls affiliated with or owned by the universities in Australia. Other members maybe admitted, on a case by case basis, on the agreement of the majority of current members.

To keep full membership current members will normally attend a conference every two years and may not delegate this duty."

In addition, Members also voted to introduce a new category of membership: 

"Associate membership to University Colleges Australia is extended to those in senior leadership roles in Colleges and Halls. To be an Associate Member the relevant CEO/Head must be a current member."
